Our Africa – Our Health™ contributes to the health of African communities by developing environmentally resilient health systems. We believe that everyone deserves access to quality health services and that a healthy environment is key to achieving this goal. That's why we empower communities and individuals through education and capacity building, promoting trust and awareness, and fostering partnerships that open up opportunities for collaboration. Our approach is holistic and forward-thinking, prioritizing sustainability and conservation to create a healthier, more resilient future for all. Let's work together to create a better tomorrow!
How we support sustainable development in Africa
HHERF connects multi stakeholders to work together to improve human and planetary health. This collaboration aims to leverage public-private partnerships, create jobs and boost local capacity to drive sustainable development. HHERF envisions a future where this joint effort brings about tangible and positive changes for the people and the planet.
Our Africa – Our Health™ doesn’t require external funding. It is financed by assessing the value of Africa’s natural assets and leveraging wildlife’s ecosystem services to generate higher carbon credit rates and directly support local communities.
Through education and capacity building, this project delivers sustainable improvements by building resilient, green infrastructures that minimize carbon emissions. It also promotes awareness of the connection between human and planetary health for sustainable practices.
Protecting and restoring vital ecosystems and their wildlife enhances their productivity, enabling food security, clean air and water, and other health-supporting factors, while generating stable revenue streams through higher traded carbon and nature credits.
Empowering local workforce through knowledge transfer and expertise building, fuelling long-term social and economic development for sustainable growth.
HHERF facilitates project implementation using cross-border expertise through global public-private partnerships involving governments, civil society, private sector and NGOs.
Ecosystem services are the benefits people get from the natural environment, like food, clean water, and medicine. They are crucial for the functioning of ecosystems and human well-being. Preserving and enhancing these services is vital for sustainable development and the health of our societies and ecosystems.

The true value of Nature
From the smallest bacteria to the largest animal on earth, each species has a role to play and supports global ecosystems to function effectively. These services are currently neither valued nor accounted for and yet, they are directly linked to the health and well-being of people and our planet.
Elephants are vital contributors to regulate climate, enhance CO2 mitigation and support forest growth. One single elephant provides ecosystem services worth $2.6 million throughout its lifespan. However, elephant populations are declining due to poaching and habitat loss. It is vital to protect these majestic creatures to enable them to maintain the ecosystem services they provide.
Whales are crucial for supporting fish stocks, with the fishing industry worth over $150 billion. They also contribute to the $2 billion global whale watching industry and enhance phytoplankton productivity, which captures 37 billion tons of CO2 each year. A whale sequesters an average of 33 tons of CO2 over its lifetime, which is locked up when it dies and sinks to the ocean floor.
Seagrass is a remarkable plant that thrives in shallow, sheltered areas along the coast, playing a vital role in maintaining ocean and addressing environmental issues. It captures carbon up to 35 times faster than tropical rainforests, absorbing 10% of the ocean’s carbon each year. Covering 0.2% of the seafloor, seagrass is an essential tool in the fight against climate change, with a global carbon sequestration worth $1 trillion.
In addition to producing more than 50% of the oxygen in our atmosphere, the ocean serves as a critical “carbon sink,” absorbing approximately 31% of CO2 emissions. At current carbon prices, the carbon sequestration service of the open ocean is valued at over $30 trillion. This underlines the critical importance of ocean conservation and management in mitigating the impacts of climate change.
A nature-based economy prioritizing conservation can provide sustainable capital for development and combat climate change. Investing in local communities promotes long-term, sustainable change and supports achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
